See OCBC Events for details about upcoming events sponsored by OCBC. OCBC arranges quarterly 30+ singles dances and firesides for the 16 stakes in Orange County, plus a Singles Conference each summer. For more information on OCBC activities and other OC related activities, we encourage you to join the OCBC Facebook page. Below are a few FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about OCBC. Q. What’s OCBC? What activities do OCBC offer? A. OCBC simply refers to the Orange County Beach Cities Single Adult Coordinating Council comprising of all 16 Orange County Stakes, which are also within the Newport Beach Temple District. OCBC provides Regional Quarterly Devotionals (31+) with several hundred in attendance, Regional Quarterly Dances (31+) with several hundred in attendance, and the annual Orange County Singles Conference, which is the largest Single Adult Conference in California with 1,000+ in attendance. For more info on the OC Conference, go to www.ocbcconference.weebly.com. While the OCBC Single Adult Coordinating Council consists of 16 Stakes in Orange County, on average, we have singles attending our OCBC activities from over 80-100 different stakes across Southern California and beyond. Q. How did it get started? Is it “approved”? Who is part of the OCBC Committee? Who presides over OCBC? A. In early 2008, in seeing a need for more critical mass events where larger regional activities help singles feel strengthened and supported, the OC Stakes from the Carlsbad and Anaheim Missions formed the OCBC Single Adult Coordinating Council as directed and approved by Elder L. Whitney Clayton, currently serving in the Presidency of the Seventy. Today, all 16 Stakes in Orange County are a part of the OCBC Single Adult Coordinating Council, though in all honesty, some stakes are currently more involved than other stakes. The OCBC Single Adult Coordinating Council consists of Midsingle- and Single Adult Reps from all OC Stakes, any interested singles, a High Councilman from each stake, Singles Advisory Couples, and the Presidency of the Agent Stake overseeing OCBC, which is currently the Irvine Stake. So, President Rasmussen, Stake President of the Irvine Stake is currently serving as the Agent Stake President presiding over OCBC. The OCBC Coordinating Council Monthly Planning Meetings typically are held every 4th Sunday at 6pm at the Irvine Stake Center. Q. How does OCBC differ from Irvine’s Lake Single Adult Ward? A. Simply put, OCBC provides quarterly Regional OC activities pulling support from all 16 OC Stakes and singles (and Midsingles) from all over SoCal in attendance, while the Lake Ward in Irvine is a Single Adult Ward (31+) with regular ward-level activities like Sacrament, Sunday School, Priesthood, and Relief Society, home evening, break-the-fast, and other activities. So while the Irvine Stake and Lake Ward participate on the OCBC Single Adult Coordinating Council along with all the other OC Stakes, OCBC and the Lake Ward are separate entities. Q. Isn’t this for “older” singles? Do 30-something Midsingles actually attend? A. Unlike other SA activities you may have experienced, at OCBC events, we go out of our way to include singles of all ages including 30-something Midsingles. At our dances for example, we have a separate 30s Midsingles Speed Mingling Round (and other rounds for each decade), Midsingles Lounge, cool décor, current music. At our devotionals, we encourage Midsingles to sit together. At the OC Conference, we also model the dual approach of having some all-age 31+ activities and some optional activities for each decade (30s Midsingles, 40s, 50s, etc). Usually the average age at the OC Conference is 42 with 50% attending under 42, 50% over 42. So compared to other areas, OCBC events (especially our dances and conference) are very Midsingles friendly! Q. I thought Midsingles are different from Single Adults. How do Midsingles (and other age groups) fit into the 31+ Single Adult scene? A. Different areas in SoCal approach this differently. According to the Church Handbook of Instructions, technically Young Single Adults (YSA) are defined to be from ages 18 to 30, and then Single Adults are defined as Singles 31+, or 31 on up. However, within the Single Adult Program (31+) at the discretion of local stake and area leaders, there may be (official or unofficial) subsets like 30-something Midsingles, 40s Singles, 50s Singles or Elite Singles 60+ activities that supplement the all-age 31+ Single Adult Program. Elder Hales of the Twelve at a Midsingles Fireside here in Southern California in 2010 agreed and said that the “Singles Program is not a one-size-fits-all approach.” Some singles prefer all-age activities; some singles like attending their own decade activities too. So having both approaches better serves all singles. It should be stated that the large quarterly Regional OC Singles Activities sponsored by the OCBC should not be considered as “competition” or something that “takes away” from individual stake level Singles or Midsingles activities. Most singles who attend the quarterly OCBC activities also participate in their local stake Midsingles or Singles activities, too. There is synergy in having both approaches. |
